Primary Purpose of Department The Department of Religious Studies provides undergraduate and graduate instruction in the academic study of religion in a pluralistic, multicultural, and global context; conducts and publishes research related to religion; and provides service that enhances public understanding of issues related to religion. Religious studies faculty also contribute to the institutional work of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the University. Our mission is to foster critical understanding of the significance of religion in human societies and cultures.

Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Religion and Healing to begin August 2018. Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in Religious Studies or a related field at the time of appointment, teaching experience at the university level, an active research agenda that critically examines the intersections of religious practices and traditions with physical and/or mental health, and which complements our department’s existing strengths, and a commitment to diversity initiatives and expanding diversity and inclusion within the department. Time period, region of research specialization and methodological approach are open; possible areas of focus include, but are not limited to: history of science, medicine, and religion; critical race and ethnic studies; anthropology and sociology; and the body in religion.

Finalists will be asked during their screening interview to discuss how the topics of diversity and inclusion are incorporated into their teaching and research.

Minimum Experience/Education UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
Preferred Education, Skills and Experience Desired qualifications include research and pedagogic expertise in religions of the Global South; experience with quantitative research methodologies or digital humanities; and experience teaching Religious Studies theories and methods.

Applicants must be prepared to contribute to the undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Religious Studies as well as the University’s general education program.
