Zwan Postdoctoral Associate, Boniuk Institute

Position Summary

Rice University’s Boniuk Institute for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance is seeking a postdoctoral associate with a PhD in social sciences to begin on August 1, 2024.

The postdoc will report to the Associate Director of Research and the Director of the Institute, working closely with the Associate Director of Research on the following responsibilities: 1) Quantitative and/or qualitative analysis of in-house national data collections leading to collaborative publications analyzing religious discrimination, victimization, and diversity in the workplace and society more generally, 2) assisting with implementing grant-funded research such as qualitative interviews, GIS mapping, and/or survey design, and 3) assisting with the development of grant proposals for new data collections on religious diversity, conflict, and victimization.

In addition, the Zwan postdoctoral associate will participate in programming and professional development with the Boniuk Institute (and its subsidiary, the Religion and Public Life Program). The fellow will also have the opportunity to pursue independent research projects, including but not limited to publishing from their dissertation or other ongoing research. There are no teaching responsibilities associated with the position.

This position is in residence in the Boniuk Institute at Rice University.

Minimum Requirements

PhD in social sciences with substantive expertise in the study of race and religion, religion and immigration, religion and urban contexts, religion in cross-national research, or another area related to religious pluralism and diversity. PhD must be in hand by start date.

Skills Required

  • Proficient in either quantitative or qualitative data analysis software (e.g., STATA, R, NVivo, etc.)
  • Proficient in urban mapping with GIS preferred
  • Because of the needs of the Institute, preference will be given to applicants who have strong data organization and project management skills

Essential Functions

  • Quantitative survey and/or qualitative interview analysis related to religious diversity, victimization, and discrimination
  • Project management of grant-funded research such as coordinating and conducting qualitative interviews, coordinating and conducting an urban GIS mapping project, and/or assisting with survey design and validation
  • Assists with grant proposals/background research for new data collections on religious diversity and conflict
  • Works on independent research related to religion and religious diversity broadly
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

$60,000
